Group
Study:
Al-Huda
has incorporated the strategy of dividing each of its batches into
smaller groups, of approximately 30 students each, to provide a
group-based learning approach, in order to facilitate learning on a
smaller scale, via interaction with other students; also, to provide
a forum for asking questions and resolving confusions about the
daily lesson, for getting to know fellow-students personally, for
attempting paper-based tests, and for being reviewed daily in tajweed
and Quranic translation-memorization.
Each
group is allocated a “Group In-charge” – inevitably an alumnus
from one of the previous batches – who provides academic guidance
to her students on a one-to-one basis. She also keeps the students
motivated under the sometimes rigorous daily study routine, counsels
them, and conveys feedback and suggestions from them to the Program
In-charge. She
automatically becomes a role-model for the students: someone who has
gone through the Diploma Course before, and who can solve their
problems by offering tips and advice. She is also responsible for
marking their test papers and assignments.
The
timetable of each academic day provides at least half an hour for
“Groups”, as a must. This is one of the main channels of keeping
students tuned-in to daily study, homework and individual review,
ensuring that no student lags behind, or if she does, she is helped
to regain her pace with the daily tafseer lesson. A basic outline of the agenda of Groups on any
academic day comprises of the following slots:
-
Attendance
(taken by the In-charge)
-
Tajweed
-
Quran
Translation Memorization Viva:
-
The
In-charge
listens to every student's word-to-word translation turn by
turn. Throughout this activity, everyone should keep full
focus and attention on the lesson.
-
A
plain Arabic Quran (one without translation) should be held by
everyone during this activity.
-
If
someone is unable to remember part of her translation,
everyone should not correct her mistake. Only the In-charge
will reform the student's mistake or remind her.
-
Subject
Review (of the subject being taught)/Discussion - optional
The methodology
employed ensures that all students learn from each other’s
mistakes in a sincere and sisterly environment.
