This month of the Islamic calendar holds a very prestigious position due to its significance and meaning.
All the calendar systems in use today, symbolize a famous person or some festival, which does not appear to benefit the mankind in any way.
Example:
The basis of the Christian calendar is the birth of Sayyedna Isa (as). The Jewish calendar is based on the establishment of kingdom of Sayyedna Suleman (as) in Palestine. Bukrami calendar is a reminder of the birth of Raja Bakramajeet. Roman calendar symbolizes the victory of Alexander the great.
But the Islamic Hijri calendar is based on the event of migration of the Prophet (saw), which serves as a reminder for all generations that if a Muslim is surrounded by affliction and suffering, his existence in this world is made impossible and he is inhumanely subjugated and oppressed, in such conditions what shall a Muslim do?
In such a state, Islam does not teach that one should leave the path of truth and give in to falsehood, instead Islam teaches to do hijrat i.e. migrate and leave that town and city just for the sake of Allah and for following the truth.
Therefore it was on this basis that the foundations of the Islamic Hijri calendar were laid. It is indeed a unique occasion to ponder that the Islamic calendar did not start with the victories of Muslims or the death or birth of any personality and nor with the revelation it self. It starts with Hijrat, a pure symbol of patience, forbearance and tolerance, all for the cause of truth and obedience of Allah.
