Aussalamu-Alaikum

The reason I really went as far as writing you was that I live in Dallas Texas, USA. Over the week-end I was in a religious gathering and I came across some one in the gathering who was visiting from the Pakistan. Names of different Islamic scholars came under the discussion, including Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi.

Needless to say that I have been follower of Dr. Hashmi for quite some years. When I heard some unexpected remarks made by the visitor about Dr. Hashmi, I was surprised and became curious. I wanted to learn more. So I engaged in a private discussion, on a one-on-one basis, with the visitor and asked him to tell me more about Dr. Hashmi. To make it short, he did not speak well of Dr. Hashmi & her qualifications. I thought I was being mis-led about Dr. Hashmi. Since I had totally different views of Dr. Hashmi’s qualifications, so I thought why not to go ahead and write to you & get the clarification.

Again, I live in Dallas Texas, USA. I am a male. I am not sure if you are aware or not that in Western culture, especially in USA, there is no family life. There is no family bond. There is no husband-wife respect which is taught by Islam. There is no parent-children respect & manners which is taught by Islam. Most families adopt Western culture and family institution is destroyed. THIS IS A VERY, VERY, VERY EXTREMELY SERIOUS PROBLEM IN MUSLIM HOMES IN USA.

Over a few decades, I have heard countless speakers in my life in Masajids, TVs, Radios, Newspapers & so on. I am proud of the fact that I have never, ever heard no one AND, I MEAN no one speaking the way I have have heard Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi speak. Every one talks about family problems & issues but, no one and I mean no one, teaches husbands/wives DOs & DON’Ts, which I feel are the ABCs to make one’s house-hold a better home & better family. Most speakers just say things that would make their audience happy. Speakers tend to tell the audience what the audience what the want to hear. As such, the speakers try to gain public popularity. When it comes to women speakers, they try to rub in Western style freedom for women. The next thing you know is that the wife goes home and starts fighting husband.

On the contrary, I have heard Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi countless times addressing women. I have heard her teaching women DOs & DON’Ts, how to be better wives, how to make their homes better, how to make their families better and so on. I believe this kind of teachings of Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi keeps families united, keeps homes from breaking apart, keeps children’s lives from being torn apart because of divorces. Because of these teachings, I am a follower of Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi and when ever some one in the community comes to me with family problems, I recommend them to listen to Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi.

I am no one compared with Dr. Hashmi but, from what I know, any one who mis-leads the others, ALLAH SWT is not pleased with him. I feel I was mis-lead by that visitor from the Pakistan about Dr. Hashmi’s qualifications & he should not have spoken ills of her. I pray for ALLAH SWT’s guidance for every one. May no one mis-lead others. At the same time, I pray for Dr. Farhat Naseem Hashmi & her family. I pray ALLAH SWT reward her & her family in this world as well as in the next, for what she does for humanity, for what she teaches women and for making house-holds better homes. May ALLAW SWT be pleased with her and her family, in this world as well as in the next.

With Duaas, Khalid

Title:Glad to be part of your mission-‘Quran For All’

Assalamalaikum wr wb

Dear Ustadha, On this big occasion of the convocation of our batch of Taleem Al Quran, Al Khobar (Saudi Arabia) I have mixed feelings.I so much wanted to be a part of this ceremony and be able to meet my dear teacher Dr Farhat Hashmi. But Allah swt had destined for me something else.Even though I am not there to celebrate this happy occasion with my dear friends and teachers I wanted to share my thoughts.

Firstly I am thankful to Allah for giving me this privilege of being able to understand His words.Acquiring knowledge of The Holy Quran is a great blessing and also a greater responsibility. Indeed The Holy Quran is guidance for mankind. It is indeed a means of solace and cure for the hearts. The Holy Quran has Alhamdulillah completely changed my perspective, my priorities,my interests,my relationship with others and of course my relationship with My Creator.

Secondly I am very grateful to Ustadha for imparting this knowledge to us.I always had this wish to be able to understand The Words of Allah swt.Alhamdulillah Allah swt granted me this wish with Taleem Al Quran course.During the course each verse was like an awakening.I felt as if I wasn’t a true muslim before and its now that I have understood the real beauty of Islam. May Allah swt reward Ustadha for sharing her indepth knowledge and making it easy for us commoners to understand The words of Allah swt.I have benefitted tremendously from the knowledge and wisdom of The Holy Quran.

My dedicated teachers were best role models for me as how to not just acquire the knowledge but also spread it to others. They truly had the qualities of Muhsinaat. When I completed this course I was not sure what to do but Allah swt had made better plans for me Alhamdulillah. I moved to Calgary,Canada and soon met sisters who were eager to learn the book of Allah.Soon I started an online course with the intention to share this great knowledge.Alhamdulillah there are many sisters who attend and now The Holy Quran has become a part of their lives. Recently me and a dear friend of mine who is also a student of Al Huda have started online classes for kids called “Al Falah”.

Surely Allah swt gives us friends who share the same love of The Holy Quran.
Alhamdulillah I find great pleasure in letting you know dear Ustadha that because of the knowledge you gave me I am able to spread it to others and be part of your mission ‘Quran For All’.

JazakAllah khair kaseeran.

Title:Kudos to Farhat Hashmi!

In a society, where difference of opinion is not at all appreciated, the so-called Islamists and the equally rigid and extreme liberals are not ready to listen to eachothers’s reasoning, and simply dream of a country where there is no challenge to their opted point of view, people like Farhat Hashmi are the only ray of hope that continues their valuable endeavors without going into unwanted controversies.

Kudos to Ms. Hashmi..Kudos to Al-Huda!!

Title: Thank You Allah

I am a medical specialist. i first stumbled upon dr farhat hashmi’s lecture when i went to buy music cassette in 2005 (during my 2nd year residency in internal medicine). it was titled ‘Qiyamah’. i listened to it in my car. i liked the simple and easy to grasp language used to explain quranic verses related to the topic. it was new for me to listen to islam in that way after all those 25 years of my life. some days later again i went to same shop to buy music cd and alonwith it, i came across taleem ul quran 2002 cd.

As now i had the previous experience, i bought it with intention to listen it if i have ‘spare time’. one day i made myself sit to listen first lecture and that was the ‘sweetest and coolest’ mistake i ever did. Allah has helped me listen full course in about 4 years along with my training and routine.

Although it was not a formal course but it has changed my life. now i do the same job and follow same routine, but with a different objective. now i love quran because i can understand its message which was an alien for me before. i thank Allah for showing me the path and i pray Him to increase me in my knowledge and deeds so that He may love me.

Aand i cannot find adequate words to tell you about my feelings for what a great job dr farhat and her team is doing. i pray for your success in this life and in hereafter.

Title:Quran Became Alive !

Assalum u Alaikum,

Quran was a buried treasure discovered by Dr Farhat Hashmi. The gems were hidden, the lessons were there but we needed the key to open that, and that was done by Dr Farhat Hashmi and Al Huda Institute.

The message uplifts you, it shakes you, it trembles you. But only when you untie the knots of wonderous root words .
Never before, Quran reading was so engrossing and engaging. It is a wonderful world to discover, mesmerizing voyage to experience and bountiful blessing to be thankful for.

After Allah, I’m really thankful to Dr Farhat Hashmi and others who made it possible for us to taste the real sweetness of His words.

She paved the path and now there are alot of people guiding so many others with the lamp of knowledge.May Allah SWT protect her and showers His mercy on our ustazah.Ameen.

Just like Dr Zakir Naik and Dr Israr Ahmad she has been the ICON AND PRIDE of UMMAH. Infact ALHUDA HAS BEEN a great blessing of ALLAH for the educated youth of umah.

May ALLAH ,reward you immensley ,increase your knowledge, lucidity, and passion for all the beneficial endeavour

I am one of the most stringent and arduous student to be taught ever, who withdraws immediately if teacher doesn’t follow this proverb “What is said from heart, reaches heart”.

In the case of Quranic Teaching its is indispensable as all the right ingredients are required of BLESSING,GUIDANCE,PASSION,SINCERE INTENTION,AUTHENTIC KNOWLEDGE,CORRECT UNDERSTANDING,ACTION,MODERATION,COMPLETE TRUST IN ALLAH(SWT)& ALLAH’s PROTECTION

Alhamdulillah Dr Farhat Hashmi Sahiba is the only scholar that I came across who possess all the above.
I thank ALLAH(SWT) for granting us all such a rare gem in the form of Dearest USATAZA.

I am grateful to ALLAH(swt)that I come across this website and got a chance to benefit from this wonderful person, who makes Quran a part of my heart, feeling Quran as somthing very personal to me.

Alhamdulillah. I am very fortunate to have found this way of learning the Quran. I pray for Dr Farhat Hashmi that Allah accepts her efforts in helping Muslim ladies learn the Quran in the most effective, simple as well as touching way. The way she teaches the Quran is something that we easily identify with. It seems that she plays the role of a mother and elder sister in guiding us to the way of Islam.
I lost my parents but when I listen to her talks I feel as if my parents are still there to tell me right and wrong and to help me lead the life in the light of the Quran.
I pray that Allah guide me and keep me guided to the right path and give me strength of Eman to pass this message of the Quran forward to others. May Allah help all of us students of the Quran and all Muslims in general to practice what we learn from the Holy Quran..aameen.

What Qari Hanif Says About Alhuda

Dr.Farhat Hashmi Amongst The 500 Most Influential

Dr. Farhat Hashmi Amongst The 500 Most Influential Muslims-2010

This List of 500 Most Influential Muslims 2010 is the second of the annual series which highlights people who are influential as Muslims, published by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, affiliated with the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, in Amman, Jordan.

The book lists the 500 most influential people in the Muslim world, breaking the people into several distinct categories. The Top 50 are only in the International Islamic Networks and Issues of the Day lists, where as the rest of the 450 leaders are categorized by their diverse fields of work and appear unranked under their country in various categories. Under the category scholarly, the scholars, thinkers, and educators have been chosen who have made significant contributions to the study and cultivation of Islamic knowledge and Muslim culture.

Dr.Farhat Hashmi has been listed under the category Scholarly and has been introduced as follows on page 108:

An Ambassador of Islam

Dr. Farhat Hashmi: An Ambassador of Islam, A Beacon of Light

Sisters in Solidarity  $1000.00 Scholarship Winning Essay by Anum Shami

In your opinion, who has been the most influential Muslim woman of the past century?  Discuss her contribution to society and how it continues to impact our lives today.”

It was in 1990’s when one Muslim woman decided to take on an important mission: to raise Allah’s banner high. Dr.Farhat Hashmi graduated with a M.A. in Arabic from Punjab University and a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from University of Glasgow. But this motivated sister took her education and knowledge to the next level. She decided to share it…with the whole world.

Dr. Hashmi lectured at her local college teaching young women Arabic and Islamic Studies. Alongside she would give halaqahs (lectures/ study circles) to women from all walks of life. But as her halaqahs grew, attracting Pakistani women of all social and financial statuses, she realized that Allah SWT had given her a task to replace light with the ignorance that was consuming our Ummah. Dr. Hashmi then established Al-Huda International in two locations in Pakistan. The founded organization defines itself as “a non-political, welfare, educational, training and research oriented Islamic organization”. It was not long after that her teaching style attracted Muslimahs thirsty for knowledge from the US, England, Canada and the Middle East. Over 10,000 students have graduated from the Al-Huda programs. Students can take courses both in English or Urdu, whichever language they prefer but ultimately all the students are dedicated to understand the language of Allah.

Primarily catering to women, Dr. Hashmi opens the eyes of narrow-minded Muslims as to the role of women in Islam. Using the Quran and Sunnah as her ultimate sources, Dr. Farhat works diligently to eradicate the cultural stereotypes projected of a woman’s position in contemporary society and replaces it with the truth and guidance that Allah SWT has revealed for us in our complete and beautiful Deen (religion). Bringing the freedom of knowledge to the ignorant angers some, as they lose their power over the ignorant and weak but her moral and ethical teaching styles truly changed many lives.

Encouraging women to seek an education allows them to develop a more spiritual connection with their Rabb (Lord). While lecturing, Dr. Farhat constantly prompts her students to stop and ponder about their purpose in life. Why are we here? The Quran is our manual for life warning us that there is an afterlife. Materialism and love of the dunya will not benefit us on the Day of Judgment. If one woman can wake up thousands of Muslims to the reality of our life’s purpose, imagine the reward that Allah SWT will bless her with when each of her students brings productive change in their own lives.

I believe Dr. Faraht Hashmi is one of the most influential Muslim woman figures in contemporary times, her success and recognition is because she continues to put Allah first in her life. Success is not measured by the worldly gains but rather the amount of preparation for the Akhirah (Hereafter). Dr.Hashmi has made a global contribution to the Ummah by providing the means to spiritual satisfaction and by generating leaders who will continue to propagate Islam to the four corners of the Earth.

Assalam-o-alaikum ! I am not qualified to comment on the whole world or the whole century; but in Pakistan that is absolutely true. She has very positively influenced the educated, modern reasonably well-to-do women who were till yesterday busy (oh So busy), with their coffee parties or fashion shopping etc.etc. She has managed to convince them to hold fast to the Quran and lead their lives according to it….a feat no-one was able to do for the past couple of centuries. Not only that,a large number of her students have been motivated to expand her work whole-heartedly, and I being among one of their beneficiaries am totally in awe of their dedication.I could never have hoped to have such easy access to understanding the Quran, just e few years ago. A tree is known by its fruit. May Allah reward them All…..Ameen I Pray that there may be more women like her all over the globe.

Assalamualaikum Wr Wb My experience with Dr. farhat Hashmi has been of a enlightening nature. Allah opened the doors of Islam to me thru her. After spending time with her as a Listener and then a regular student, the changes in me may not be very impressive to you, as I am no GREAT SCHOLAR but She showed me simply how to be regular in my prayers, fast with zeal, she showed me how to share what I learnt from her, she taught me to say sorry to people I hurt, she taught me to start preparing for my real life, she taught me to give and give with a open heart.I learnt not to belittle others despite the fact they may not approve of the teachings at Alhuda. For others these things may seem trivial but not to me. My sincere duas for her and her family. Definitely she is the woman I vote for

Thank you for recognizing, Dr. Farhat Hashmi’s contibution to women of Muslim Ummah. Dr. Hashmi is a great teacher who has absolutely taken the ignorant Muslim women by their foreheads to change the life for their own benefit in this world and hereafter. These women that I noticed are indeed from all walks of life. The ladies who have benefited from Dr. Hashmi’s institute, lectures, personal visits to different cities in different parts of the world, including here in Canada, and word of mouth, are examples that I have personally experienced in my own circle of family and friend are some wonderful ladies from rich, educated, influential, elite group of people who have changed their unislamic life styles to the beautiful way of our Deen e Islam. I have to mention about my own experience…..I find Dr. Hashmi’s way of teaching has brought me very close to my Creator, the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Mohammad Salalallaho Alai Wa Sallim, in short the beauty of our time on this earth. Also, to remind us of what are we going to take with us from this world for the benefit of our life to come, the “Aqirah”. I’m indeed very thankful to Allah Subhanao t’Ala for blessing us with the opportunity to learn from Dr. Hasmi. Jazak Allah Khairan, Dr. Farhat Hashmi for being a great teacher and a role model for us (the ignorant generation). Also, thanks a million to the writer of this article to bring out the beauty of learning from Dr. Farhat Hashmi..

Just remmber in your dua’a may Allah make us good Muslim and make us stand up strongly in Islam. One thing I noticed that if the person have back up and strong company then courage will come. But people like us. Istghfura’Allah fall so fast. May Allah keep our heart stright on the path of Islam.

Dr Farhat Hashmi is the first person who is teaching the Quran in such a simple way that it is so easy to under stand the Quran and Hadees. There are lots of Quran translation avalible but the way Dr Farhat explains the meaning of Quran and relates it with our daily life, it makes it more interesting and easy to act upon it. Dr Farhat Hashmi work is changing the lives all over the word and people are understanding the Quran the way it was meant to be . i pray to ALLAH SUBHANATALLAH to give her long and healthy life so she can continue the work she started and make us all to help in that mission because this is the only way we muslims can come out of darkness and make our lives more meaning full and beneficial for others.

Local Students of Farhat Hashmi Defend Movement Against Accusations

Area Muslim women responded to recent allegations that a famous female Islamic lecturer was promoting extremism, calling the media reports baseless.

Dr. Farhat Hashmi’s Al-Huda International Welfare Foundation, an Islamic, educational institute that gives to the needy and also provides Islamic learning to women of all ages around the world through online lectures, was accused of promoting an “orthodoxy” that “echoes the Taliban’s vision for Pakistan” in an April 5, 2010 National Public Radio (NPR) segment.

“I don’t see how those allegations could fit”, said Samiyah Mustafa from Rockville, 18, in an interview with the Muslim Link. She took an Al-Huda International Foundation course in January 2009 and finished it one month ago.

The Muslim Link found similar responses from women taking Al-Huda’s summer courses in Pakistan, evening courses (for working women), and online courses. Many of the school’s ‘students’ are under-the-radar, as they listen to Dr. Hashmi’s tapes and cassettes. “Dr. Hashmi? My mother listens to her lectures like a drug!” says one teenage Muslimah in Montgomery. The sister is a second-generation Indian-Muslim, and her mother has been living in the United States since her high school years.

Al-Huda’s students have grown into a vast network of millions of women worldwide, often organized into local groups that meet at houses. The classes—taught both in Urdu and English– started in Dr. Farhat Hashmi’s own house, when the sister with a PhD in Hadith Sciences from the University in Glasgow begun to teach Islam full-time in 1994. She relocated to Canada after demand for her classes grew in the country.

The “sorority of Al-Huda”, as one sister in Saudi Arabia puts it, were dismayed to hear the institute being accused of breeding terrorism.

“I think it’s a baseless allegation as are most of the allegations we keep hearing and reading about,” opined Um-e-Abdullah, a Pakistani sister who did her Diploma Course in Islamic Education from Al-Huda. “As a student of Al-Huda I don’t know which of the teachings could be interpreted without considerable use of one’s imagination.”

Even so, Al-Huda’s teachings are repeatedly being used in the media in connection to extremism, in recent controversial coverage by major news sources such as NPR, Globe, Newsline, and Dawn. They cite growth in the selling and wearing of ‘abayahs in Pakistan after the school’s establishment as an example of Al-Huda’s “talibinisation” of women.

Most alarming to Al-Huda’s critics is the growing influence of the education movement on an international scale. Nadeem Paracha, a columnist for Dawn newspaper, says, “if the Taliban are playing a destructive role in a political matter, then these preachers are playing a very destructive role in a culturally and social manner.” Mr. Paracha did not elaborate on the means of which the institute or Dr. Hashmi are playing out their “very destructive role.”

In contrast to Mr. Paracha’s statements, however, are the values Al-Huda’s students have come away with:

“Humility, peace, and submission to Allah,” says Sadaf Farooqi, a visiting faculty member of the institute in Pakistan and graduate of the school’s basic and advanced Taleem Al-Wuran courses.

“When each one of us strengthened our own hearts through Allah’s message,” said Mahvash Choudhury of Rockville, who took the Ta’leemul Qur’an course 10 years ago at Al-Huda in Islamabad, “we would become better people and we would be living what our deen advocates: a life of peace and comfort and a life of sacrifice and happiness and all of that together into a life of harmony.

“In every story and every ayat she’d [Dr. Hashmi] ask us a question to ask ourselves: What is Allah saying to me? What is in here for me?” continued Sr. Mahvash. “…The Qur’an is a compilation of lessons for us to gain from, and in every lesson we have to ask ‘Where do I fall, what changes do I have to make within myself?’ ”

For Sr. Sadaf, she was inspired to not only cover up after graduating from the course, but to drop her previous, mostly secular lifestyle to “completely reverting to Islam, embracing the mustahabat (highly recommended actions) as well.” She faced opposition from her extended family about separating from the norm by studying the Qur’an instead of taking up a job after college. She is now a writer for Muslimmatters.org, SISTERS magazine, Hiba magazine, and the Saudi gazette.

Sr. Samiyah realized the importance of salah “in times of Struggle.” Before the course she took online, she described herself as “the type of person to think ‘that’s not going to make a difference. Pray two rak’ahs? Come on’. But now if I’m having an off day, I’ll pray salah, because I know Allah is the only one who can change it for me.”

Some women on antidepressants “found a cure for their illness through this course,” said Um-e-Abdullah.

The students appreciate this focus on a person’s ‘inner being’ because it allows both purification and
accessibility for anyone looking into Al-Huda. “An… aspect that attracts women ….are the teachers,” says Sr. Sadaf, “who [are] polite, non-judgmental, speak English well, relate to modern-day issues, and look past a student wearing e.g. sleeveless or skinny jeans, to see the person within — the person who wants to connect to Allah and achieve success in the Hereafter.”

“My vision is that the Quran reaches everyone, because it is Allah’s message to humanity,” says Dr. Hashmi in a recent interview. She began teaching Arabic and Islamic Studies to women at the International Islamic University Islamabad after getting a Masters in Arabic from Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan, and her PhD.

Yet her degrees don’t qualify her as an authority on Islam to some of Pakistan’s ulema who have passed fatwas against the daughter of the late scholar, Abdur Rehman Hashmi. They criticize her “feminist” approach and say she has “liberalized” Islam, despite Dr. Hashmi having been guided in her study abroad by the late contemporary muhaddith (scholar specializing in ahadith), Sheikh al-Albani, rahimullah.

In return, Dr. Hashmi refuses to “take dictation from the ulema and teach their version of Islam,” criticizing their “rigid” stances on Qur’anic interpretations as being based on “whatever a scholar said a thousand years ago being the final word…[that interpretation] was made in a different historical era and environment. Today [it] cannot apply,” she says, as she believes, “there is a capacity within Islam to grow with changing times.”

She is for “interpretation on all issues,” including today’s human rights’ issues concerning women, though reinterpretation must be “within the parameters of the Quran.” Dr. Hashmi does not believe a proper authority yet exists, however, for this type of mass ijtihad (an individual, interpretive form of deriving Islamic laws).

Dr. Hashmi has not offered any different stances on any traditionally obligatory norms of a Muslim woman’s role in society, but she pushes for women to get an education: “As far as the Taliban are concerned, I have heard that they are against the education of women. When I myself have done my Ph.D and gone to a foreign land to study, how can I tell others not to do the same?”

While teaching at the university in Islamabad, Dr. Farhat gave halaqahs (religious study circles) to women, from–according to one essayist–of “all walks of life.” She received notable attention, however, from her sessions with Pakistan’s upper elite, one session including Mrs. Farooq Leghari, Pakistan’s First Lady in 1999.

Many criticize her focus on teaching the rich, however. In an article by Canadian-run Maclean’s, the conservative and widely-read magazine highlighted Dr. Hashmi’s amassed earnings from her “rich man’s preacher” job. Dr. Hashmi, mother of four, said in an interview with Newsline’s Samina Ibrahim, felt it “would make more sense” for her to begin teaching with the “urban and academic” like herself, believing that starting with the “under-privileged” would have kept her message “restricted only to them; they would not have been able to influence other sections of society.”

Macleans also published mention of Dr. Hashmi’s uttering that the 2008 October 8 earthquake in Pakistan—with 80,000 dead– was a punishment from God, due to the mostly poor region’s immorality. This comment was allegedly caught on tape during one of Dr. Hashmi’s lectures by the Globe’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chenoy, on an ‘undercover documentary’ that the Muslim Link could not find on the Web, and, despite repeated calls and emails, has yet to receive a response on from Ms. Obaid-Chenoy, or Al-Huda International.

The school does “donate and provide funds to those who need it,” says Umm Maryam. Indeed, the “dues of others”—words an online student from Northern VA— is something the school (a Welfare Foundation) emphasizes, since services like “natural calamities relief and disaster management, digging wells in drought-stricken areas of Pakistan, [and] stipends and food provision to widows and orphans,” are a part of the school’s social welfare program stated on its website, alhudapk.com.

Al-Huda provides financial aid for those who can’t afford it, while some of Al-Huda’s students bear their classmates tuition in the spirit of “sadaqa jariyah”, says Sr. Samiyah.

According to Faiza Mushtaq–she is writing her thesis on the Al-Huda movement– the school receives most of its revenue through donations and its sale of merchandise.

Sr. Mahvash Choudhury believes the school’s funding “come[s] from Allah. They teach within their means, so most of her [Dr. Hashmi] efforts are towards the Qur’an and not fundraising. So that for me is a strong indication of truth.”

“Al-Huda is just a place that’s finally offering the people what they need,” says Sr. Samiyah. “The Qur’an is there for everyone but not everyone understands it. They took the first place to understand it themselves and now they’re teaching it, and… I think they’re so sincere in their efforts, [so] alhamdullilah, alhamdullilah, I think that’s why Allah is letting them survive still, despite so much opposition for Dr. Farhat.”

To Dr. Hashmi, a labeled feminist, Al-Huda is “a kind of women’s empowerment program. And…knowledge is the best way to empower women, especially spiritual knowledge.”

The biggest pain in an argument is when we ignore our opponent. This pain is worst than the pain inflicted from a knife. I G N O R E

Surah Kafirun gives us the background mentality of the oppressors that they try to destroy, if they can’t then they try to intimidate, if they fail then they try to negotiate. Efforts to destroy Al-Huda has failed (alhamdulillah). Now it’s the face of intimidation and insha’allah this will pass as well.

TRANSCRIPT

In Pakistan, wealthy women have been returning to Islam and finding comfort in Al Huda, a new network of religious schools. The students insist the faith they are studying is peaceful and tolerant. But critics hear echoes of Taliban ideology in what the schools preach.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Far from the headlines about its war on extremists, Pakistan is undergoing a more subtle debate over religion. It’s been sparked by a popular female evangelist. She’s created a massive network of Islamic schools that cater to elite, educated women. The classes preach tolerance and mercy, though some Pakistanis fear they’re breeding intolerance. NPR’s Asma Khalid reports.

ASMA KHALID: Huria Yawar(ph) glances at the Cartier watch on her wrist. Then she climbs the stairs to this Islamic school in Central Lahore.

Unidentified Group: (Foreign language spoken)

KHALID: Yawar has five kids and a master’s in psychology. But she says she had no direction in life until she came here.

Ms. HURIA YAWAR (Student, Al Huda): When we come here, each and every letter of that holy book is really seeping in our heart, and which we didn’t know before. And we regret that at the age of 45, 48, so it’s a shame for us.

(Soundbite of laughter and crowd chatter)

KHALID: Here at the Islamic school, Yawar is joined by other upper-crust housewives, some with Blackberries in hand, others with luxury cars parked outside. For years, most wealthy women in Pakistan scoffed at overt piety. But now many women who once sported sleeveless shirts are covering their faces. It’s a trend across the Muslim world. These women in Pakistan found their faith with Farhat Hashmi.

Ms. FARHAT HASHMI (Scholar; Founder, Al Huda): (Foreign language spoken)

KHALID: She’s a household name in Pakistan. Radio stations in nearly every major city broadcast her sermons. Her public lectures draw crowds in the thousands. But more important than all of that is the school system she’s created. It’s called Al Huda. The first branch opened in the mid-1990s. And since then, it’s grown exponentially.

Ms. FAIZA MUSHTAQ (Ph.D. Student, Northwestern University): To simplify it a little bit, it’s run like a franchise.

KHALID: That’s Faiza Mushtaq. She’s at Northwestern University, writing her Ph.D. on the Al Huda phenomenon.

Ms. MUSHTAQ: These women come to Al Huda, spend a year or two years getting a diploma. And then these women go back to their hometowns or to their own neighborhoods, use the same sort of education materials, the course plans, Farhat Hashmi’s lecture tapes, and start offering a diploma course of their own.

KHALID: Today, Al Huda has more than 200 branches.

Unidentified Woman #1: (Chanting in foreign language)

KHALID: One of them is the school Huria Yawar studies. Here, like all of the Al Huda branches, the focus is the Quran. Students learn line-by-line translations and analysis. They learn about the importance of mercy and forgiveness -nothing political and nothing violent. It’s a stark contrast from the extremist rhetoric taught in some schools.

Today’s sermon deals with the vices of materialism.

Unidentified Woman #2: No, it is just (unintelligible). Don’t get impressed by these things. They’re superficial.

KHALID: The teacher is one of Farhat Hashmi’s direct disciples. She speaks Urdu with a flare and has a soft, inviting tone.

(Soundbite of crowd chatter)

KHALID: A conversation soon erupts about family life.

(Soundbite of crowd chatter)

KHALID: One student complains that it’s impossible for her to suggest her husband pray. They just end up in a fight. Another woman laments that she can’t cover her head because her kids make fun of her. Lumara Suehail(ph) says her husband mocks her religious studies.

Ms. LUMARA SUEHAIL (Student, Al Huda): When I come here, my husband says you’ve become a Taliban. And I’ve been…

KHALID: Suehail slips into class more than two hours late this morning.

Ms. SUEHAIL: The reason that I come late is also because he doesn’t like it if he’s home and I leave for my class. He doesn’t. So I wait for him, till he goes to the office, whether it’s 9:00 or it’s 10:00 or if it’s 11:00, I cannot leave the house without unless he goes because he doesn’t like that.

KHALID: Suehail regularly goes to coed parties and she doesn’t wear a headscarf, but she’s committed to Al Huda. She says it’s changed her life.

Ms. SUEHAIL: After coming here, I realize that God is so soft. It attracts you to – in a loving manner. I think it’s a very peaceful religion. We have to understand it, and we are not understanding – I mean, most of the people don’t actually understand the religion and they’re just going away from it. They’re being shunned away, basically, because, you know, the way it’s been portrayed, you don’t want to come near it. You don’t want to find out what’s happening.

KHALID: In the past, Islamic education in Pakistan was limited to poor, uneducated men. Al Huda is changing that. It’s bringing religious literacy to an influential demographic.

Saj Tahashmi(ph) was a student in 1997. She’s since opened up her own branch in a military housing section of Lahore. She says Al Huda made Islam easy.

Ms. SAJ TAHASMI: (Through translator) Al Huda dealt with people very leniently. Some women wore a headscarf, and some didn’t. But they were all allowed to attend classes. Before Al Huda, there was no concept in our Islamic educational system that someone could go and sit in a Quran class not wearing a headscarf.

KHALID: Faiza Mushtaq, the Ph.D. candidate from Northwestern University, says Al Huda is no longer just a network of religious schools. It’s become a social movement.

Ms. MUSHTAQ: What these women are being taught is that here, understand the Quran, now change yourself, and then go out and change other people one by one, so your family and your community and your schools and your workplaces and your offices rather than coming out onto the street or marching or holding placards or targeting the state. No. The targets and the goals of the movement are different, but it is still very much a movement in the sense that it goes beyond individual transformation, and ultimately has a vision of what it wants our Pakistani society to look like.

KHALID: That scares some people in Pakistan, like Nadeem Paracha. He’s a columnist for the popular English-language newspaper Dawn. He says Farhat Hashmi may use gentle words, but deep down, she’s an extremist. Her orthodoxy echoes the Taliban’s vision for Pakistan.

Mr. NADEEM PARACHA (Columnist, Dawn Newspaper): I don’t care about if they call themselves soft Muslims or whatever. They are playing an equally destructive role. If the Taliban are playing a destructive role in a political matter, then these preachers are playing a very destructive role in a culturally and social manner.

Ms. HASHMI: You cannot make people happy, and this is not my goal.

KHALID: That’s Farhat Hashmi herself. She rarely gives interviews, but after repeated attempts, she agreed to a short conversation on her cell phone.

Ms. HASHMI: They don’t really know what we are doing. Sometimes, it is misconception. Sometimes it is a different point of view.

KHALID: She insists that she preaches tolerance, not tyranny. But not everyone believes her. Hashmi’s classes exist in a climate of religious anxiety here in Pakistan. It’s a place where suicide bombers are ripping through markets in the name of Islam. And it’s a place where born-again, bourgeois Muslims are muddling the very idea of what it means to be a modern woman.

Asma Khalid, NPR News.

INSKEEP: And we’re following news that several explosions struck the Pakistani city of Peshawar today. We’re told that Islamist militants attacked the U.S. consulate. Police also report gunfire in that city. A total of three people are confirmed killed. The death toll was much higher, around 40, when a suicide bomber attacked a political rally elsewhere in northwestern Pakistan.

(Soundbite of music)

INSKEEP: It’s NPR News.

Bismillah Assalam o elikum ,
I have been lucky to spend some time with my respected teacher Farhat Hashmi in Canada .Before joining Alhuda I had been working in many different fields & places e.g teaching in Pakistan & UK,Hotel Management in Bermuda & Dubai.
But the truth I found in Alhuda was that whatever Ustazah farhat Hashmi is teaching she is encouraging people to practice .After i joined Alhuda, I started realizing my rights as a mother,as a wife, as a sister ,as a daughter,as a sister-in-law, daughter-in-law & as a mother-in-law.I am tought to be myself, devoted & loyal to Allah with my mind ,body & soul with my best Ikhlaq ,respect & honestly fulfill my duties with expectation of reward in Jannah.
This righteous thinking & sincerity has made our lives peaceful.
Thanks JKA

Assalam o alekum Warahmatullahe wabarkatuhu Readers.
Its almost one and a half year that I have been studying at Al-,Huda and to-date I have heard that our teacher, Farhat Hashmi (Founder of Al-huda) just wants to tell people what Allah (subhanatallah) is Saying in His Book, Quran. Her explanation is very logical, easy to understand and uses authetic Ahadees to explain the verses.
She explains Islam as a very simple, beautiful, easy religion to follow and has never said anything related or promoting the message of extremisum, distruction, voilence etc.
The best thing about her is that what she teaches, she practices. She has great love and respect in her heart for Allah (subhanatallah) and Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and wants everyone around her to love and respect them too. She is very focused about her aim in life and destiny (akharat). She is speading Islam, She is speading Peace, and her tools are Quran and Sunnah _ the source which guides all-manking to the right path. M

ASALAMOULAIKUM,
I think its really unfortunate, if we dont realise and appreciate what DR.Farhat is doing, she is spreading message of islam and teachings of Quran in outstanding way there are too many branches of ALHUDA now Allhamdoulilah which is a proof of amazing sucess of this Institute,
This Institute is teaching us Quran and sunnah by authentic sources and DR.Farhat encourages us to practice our faith in every aspect of life which is most important requirement of islam. So, rather than criticise or blamming its really worthwhile to learn and gain more knowldge of Quran and sunnah if we want higher grades in AKHARA.
Iam really thankful to ALLAH(SWT) Who grant me an oppurtunity to learn Quran and teachers like DR Farhat. May ALLAH bless her with more health, istiqamat, Imman and give her best in this Duniya and Hereafter.”Ameen”.

In this existing world we are bound to obey the commands of one or the other, these commands may be of the creator of this world or our own self or may be the “new world’s order”.
So why not we obey the commands of our creator rather than any others:) ALHUDA is not an issue, One can get the understanding for commands of the creator from where ever they want, everyone is having their own choice and free will. who ever will truly work for the creator, the creator will raise his name,no matter who the person or institute is.

Assalam o Alikum!
I often listen Doctor Farhat Hashmi’s lectures online. Her style of preaching is very logical and good.I find real spirit of Islam here.I want to join Alhuda regulary but their are some problems.Alhuda is doing good work to spread Islam , but still there are many areas in Pakistan where people need guidance , people don’t even know what the Islam actually is? In my village and in the areas closer to it people are mostly sunni and their believes are too much wrong.I request doctor Farhat Hashmi and Alhuda team to open their branch in our area( salhoki chatha , Teh. Wazirabad , district Gujranwala ).Thanks

I am so happy to come across this report by Inskeep. I wish I had found this out before I met him at npr last year. Proud to be a student of Dr. Farhat, a hijabi and equally sad to listen to Mr. Paracha’s views about Al-huda. I wish he wakes up from his ignorance soon.
To share my experience, I am following her online lectures since early 2012. Being a socially active and travelling person, I have learnt through her lectures, how to communicate with people from different cultures and faiths, to be tolerant and kind. Qur’an has become so understandable. Alhamdulillah. I wonder how could a columnist make such remarks not knowing the institute and calling it a place like that of taliban and intolerance.
